Introduction to the Places Visited
Dadaocheng: Historically rich, Dadaocheng is a significant area in Taipei known for its vibrant cultural heritage and historical importance. It was one of the key commercial centers in Taipei during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly during the Qing Dynasty and the Japanese colonial period. The area offers firsthand experiences of historical architecture, local foods, and traditional customs, providing students with a deeper appreciation of Taiwan's local culture and the importance of preserving cultural heritage.
Taipei Fine Arts Museum: Located in Zhongshan District, this museum symbolizes Taiwan's artistic spirit. It hosts various art exhibitions, both local and international, and showcases the transformation of Taiwanese architecture and art, mainly after 1945. The museum reflects the growth and diverse influences that have shaped Taiwan over the years. The visit aimed to educate students on this evolution of Taiwanese art and architecture.
The Proceedings
We kept to the schedule, and students were instructed to assemble at the school’s gate at 9:00 am. After everyone arrived, we left the school shortly after 9:15 am. On the bus ride, instructions were clearly explained to all students, detailing the expected activities, meeting spots, and what to anticipate from the field trip.
Upon arriving at Dadaocheng, we took a group photo and then split up. Students had 2 hours to explore individually or in groups, including lunch time, with the freedom to choose their meals from local shops. As compensation for lunch, each student was given a coupon for the Louisa Coffee shop on campus valued at $100 NTD. Once the 2 hours were up, attendance was taken at the specified meeting time and place to ensure everyone's safety. We then headed to Taipei Fine Arts Museum, arriving around 1:10 PM via the tour bus. Johanna, the professor's TA, acted as the tour guide, giving an overview of each exhibition. Students were allotted time to wander freely and observe the exhibitions, including the unique William Kentridge exhibition, featuring his films and their final paintings. At around 3:20 pm, everyone assembled, and roll call was made once again to ensure all students were present. We then headed back to Taoyuan and arrived at the school’s main gate at 4:30 pm.
Outcome of the Activity
The exhibitions were fascinating, and allowing students to explore freely was beneficial, as it gave them the opportunity to focus on what interested them the most. Group work encouraged sharing of opinions and collaborative learning. In the museum, many students split up and individually pondered the artwork, reflecting deeply on their experiences. Overall, the activity went smoothly as planned, and the students appeared satisfied with the field trip, hopefully having gained valuable insights into the integration of art and humanities.
